According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft of certain 2020-2024 Tellurides may not be fully engaged. Over time, this can lead to “unintended vehicle movement” while the cars are in park — increasing potential crash risks.

Kia America decided to recall all 2020-2023 model year and select 2024 model year Tellurides earlier this month, NHTSA documents show. At the time, no injuries or crashes were reported.

To remedy this issue, recall documents say, dealers will update the affected cars’ electronic parking brake software and replace any damaged intermediate shafts for free.

Texas AG probes Boeing supplier

The Texas attorney general has opened an investigation into a key Boeing supplier that is already facing scrutiny from federal regulators over the quality of parts that it provides to the aircraft maker.

The office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said it began looking into Spirit AeroSystems because of “apparent manufacturing defects” in parts that “have led to numerous concerning or dangerous incidents.”

In a statement late last week, a Spirit spokesman said, “While we do not comment on investigations, Spirit is wholly focused on providing the highest quality products to all our customers, to include the Boeing Company.”

Paxton asked the Wichita, Kansas-based supplier to turn over documents produced since the start of 2022 about communication with investors and Boeing about flaws in parts and corrective steps the company took.

2024 Maybach GLS600 is over the top https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/03/28/2024-maybach-gls600-is-over-the-top/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 10:03:37 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4487814 In Grasso’s Garage, there are multiple types of luxury. Those who enjoy driving and those who enjoy being driven. This week, we finally identified one that has both features and displays it very well; the 2024 Maybach GLS600. This glimmer of luxury is exactly that, the ultimate version in fact, as Mercedes continues to utilize the Maybach nameplate for its exquisite display of fine luxury and accouterments.

Starting on the exterior, a two-tone Mojave Silver and Emerald Green Metallic paint job is witnessed; not my favorite but one that certainly confirms its Maybach stature. Riding on 23” forged Monoblock wheels, the Maybach GLS600 is similar to that of your couch, for the passengers at least. On the inside, this is luxury at its finest. 2 rear reclining and massaging seats with footrests, pillows, a champagne bottle sized refrigerator, folding tables that hide in the rear center console, wireless charging station and champagne flute holders. Controls for the volume and other items are also witnessed. Mind you, this is all of the rear passengers to enjoy, confirming this vehicle is meant to be driven in. For the driver and front passenger, its typical Mercedes, a large infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, heated and ventilated and massaging seats, and the center console touchpad for operation of the infotainment system.

Powering the Maybach GLS600, is the 4.0L Bi-turbo Mercedes power plant, providing 550 horsepower and 536 lb-ft of torque. 4Matic all wheel drive and an array of drive options/safety features were present. We utilized sport mode for that enhanced sporty feel on our week long tester which a quicker demand for power and lower ride height. A 4 year / 50,000 mile warranty and 24-hour roadside assistance was included in the GLS600, while options seemed to be at the forefront of the price tag. Coming in at just under $175K, the paint option was an additional $18,500, while the wheels, fridge, tables, and flute holders totaled just under $10K.

As Mercedes continues to try and lead the upper luxury category, they do a great job with basics where needed and provide strict attention to detail when required. The Maybach is stylish on the interior, while onlookers certainly know what it is when they see it from afar. In today’s market, this beast of an SUV brings everything they have to the table, along with the price tag.

Ticker: Air bags prompt recall at Stellantis; Alleged ‘jammer’ sales probed at Amazon  https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/03/24/ticker-air-bags-prompt-recall-at-stellantis-alleged-jammer-sales-probed-at-amazon/ Sun, 24 Mar 2024 21:02:07 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4590929 Stellantis is recalling nearly 318,000 Dodge and Chrysler sedans worldwide because the side air bag inflators can explode with too much force and hurl metal fragments at drivers and passengers.

The recall covers air bag inflators on both sides of certain Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 large cars from the 2018 through 2021 model years.

The automaker says in documents posted Friday by U.S. safety regulators that moisture may get into the inflators due to a manufacturing defect and cause corrosion and cracks. The air bags can inflate even without a crash due to high temperatures in the cabin, the company said.

Dealers will replace both side air bag modules. Owners will be notified starting May 3. Stellantis said in a statement Friday that owners who are concerned about driving their cars should contact the company. It would not say if loaner vehicles would be offered.

Alleged ‘jammer’ sales probed at Amazon

Amazon is currently being investigated for selling illegal electronic devices, including radio signal jamming devices that can be used to confuse drones, thwart security systems and interfere with Wi-Fi networks.

“We have several ongoing investigations into retailers, including Amazon, for potential violations of Commission rules related to the marketing and sale of equipment without proper FCC authorization,” the Federal Communications Commission has confirmed to the Daily News.

“The use of a phone jammer, GPS blocker, or other signal jamming device designed to intentionally block, jam or interfere with authorized radio communications is a violation of federal law,” regulators specify. “It is also unlawful to advertise, sell, distribute, import or otherwise market jamming devices to consumers in the United States.”

2024 Kia Seltos declares war on the Subcompact SUV category https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/03/21/2024-kia-seltos-declares-war-on-the-subcompact-suv-category/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 10:04:40 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4483715 In 2024, Subcompact SUVs are very high on consumers’ minds and wants lists as they have grown in size, and the need for people movers has declined overall. With consumers finally realizing the need for large sized vehicles, inclusive of big back seats and 3rd-row seating capacity, is not as important as everyday driving, the interest has perked for Subcompacts.

With Honda leading the way in the Subcompact SUV category with their ever popular HR-V, their most recent turtle-shaped redesign, consumers are looking elsewhere. KIA enters Grasso’s Garage with a redesigned 2024 KIA Seltos SX Turbo AWD. With a base price of under $30K, the Seltos boasts tremendous opportunities for an array of consumers. While the HR-V and Hyundai’s Kona have historically led this category, the Mazda CX-30 and KIA Seltos are certainly making waves and for good reason. Our tester, wrapped in Pluton Blue, was a sight to see. Although not a color choice that appeals to me, I can see it being a win for consumers, giving them additional color options outside of the norm.

Powering the Seltos, is KIA’s ever popular 1.6L turbo, 4-cylinder engine with 195 lb-ft of torque, offering 195 horsepower and 8-speed automatic transmission. Keeping in mind our Seltos was all-wheel drive, made it that much better in snowy and icy conditions.

Most manufacturers in this category have seen profitable success from subcompacts. Due to their lack-luster options, basic interiors, and identifying driver wants with focus on vehicle transportation, all for an entry level price. This keeps both the consumer happy and the manufacturer, as pricing to the payment keep consumers coming back for more. With the best warranty in the business, KIA does one better, they drop the CVT transmission! Honda and others have always used the CVT transmission as it is inexpensive to build, keeping the manufacturer happy, but the consumer has to put up with the loud transmission noise to offset the good pricing, but those days are over for KIA. KIA goes back to basics with the 8-speed transmission making the Seltos a complete win for everyone.

2024 Chevrolet Suburban keeps getting better https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/03/07/2024-chevrolet-suburban-keeps-getting-better/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 11:02:01 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4355227 With people moving at the top of peoples want list in today’s consumer market, Chevrolet brings out their bests in the 2024 Suburban High Country. Our Midnight Blue Metallic stood out beautifully as blue is always the primary favorite in Grasso’s Garage. With plenty of space and comfort the Suburban High Country comes with a 3-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel which offers a $1,500 cost discount; that is a win-win for everyone. Boasting over 24 miles per gallon on our week-long test, the Suburban is the ultimate people mover. Although the Duramax engine option offers a discount, a gas option is also available.

Our 2024 Chevrolet Suburban rode on 22” sterling silver painted wheels with chrome inserts, exterior high country badging and chrome accents. LED exterior lights, hands-free liftgate, power folding mirrors and much more. On the interior, it was all luxury and style. A 10.2 inch HD Color infotainment system was paired with Google built-in capability, bluetooth, SiriusXM, Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity. But most importantly, SuperCruise, GM’s autonomous driving software and capability. Requiring a subscription, SuperCruise is the best in the business in my opinion; its easily usable technology makes hands-free driving effortless.

In addition to SuperCruise and the Advanced Technology package of under $3K, you get enhanced automatic parking, and an array of other tech features. Our tester also came with rear seat entertainment including dual 12.6” seat-mounted LCD HD touchscreens for under $2K. Sunroof, air ride suspension, adaptive cruise control, trailering package were also options witnessed on our Suburban High Country.

The overall ride of the Suburban was an enjoyable one. I was very impressed with how Chevrolet and team provided an outstanding people mover, that is comfortable, luxurious and rightly priced with a Diesel engine. GM has really stepped up their game lately in delivering an array of rightly priced vehicles to the already inflated market while keeping up with inventory demands and model options/features. As a new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado owner myself, I am confident the Suburban will make you just as happy as I am with my recent purchase.

Boston experiencing a spike in car break-ins, police say https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/02/29/boston-experiencing-a-spike-in-car-break-ins-police-say/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 20:05:08 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4506739 The Boston Police Department has noticed a spike in car break-ins and thefts of valuables and advises the public to be careful.

The rash of incidents appears to be centered in Jamaica Plain, according to an alert issued by the BPD. Since Jan. 26, that police district has seen motor vehicle larceny in areas including on Centre, Paul Gore, Forbes and Castleton streets as well as along Lochstead Avenue.

Vehicles parked in the 200-block of Boylston Street were also targeted overnight Friday into Saturday, according to police.

To avoid being targeted in this crime trend, police recommend keeping all your valuables hidden, keeping your vehicle locked and all your windows closed, opting for parking spots in well-lighted and well-populated areas, installing anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks and car alarms, and not keeping a spare set of keys in or on the vehicle.

Finally, the cops say to “stay aware.”

“Remaining vigilant of your surroundings when approaching or leaving your vehicle and promptly reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities, including by calling 911, can help prevent theft and unauthorized access,” the BPD alert states.

This is a developing story.

2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a big buck with a small bang https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/02/29/2024-mitsubishi-outlander-phev-is-a-big-buck-with-a-small-bang/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 15:56:53 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4002772 In October of 2016, Nissan took majority ownership in Mitsubishi North America. With this, the rollout of a new flagship was appropriate and the Mitsubishi Outlander was created. In 2024, a new position exists for Mitsubishi and it’s the Outlander PHEV. With Nissan funding the efforts, clearly we recognize a Nissan Rogue in disguise as the Mitsubishi Outlander and with the PHEV we recognize additional chrome characteristics. But, in Grasso’s Garage, its all about price, comfort and appearance and the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV comes knocking at our door with a $46,295 base price… Yikes; that seems excessive for the Nissan-partnership brand and with Infiniti also under the Nissan umbrella, this is very surprising. Even with a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty similar to KIA, this price tag seems slightly excessive.

The 4-door, 5-seater all-wheel drive SUV was shown off in traditional Mitsubishi Red Diamond with a black accented roof and black interior, had the Nissan Rogue written all over it. Powering the 2024 Outlander PHEV was a 2.4L DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine, with a single speed gear box that was very loud and noticeable on both the exterior and interior. The twin electric motors provided nice torque and quick get up and go when in multiple drive modes. LED lighting, automatic seats, heated and power mirrors, as well as 20 inch two-tone alloy wheels made the Mitsubishi very appealing near and far. Additional options included, the exterior color for $995, the SEL Premium package inclusive or a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, BOSE stereo and 10.8 inch head up display.

Mitsubishi, in its every effort of claiming space in the consumer automobile market boasts a small fleet and unchartered territory in its existence. With the release of the 2024 Outlander PHEV, clearly the focus shifts towards the hybrid market and eventually full EV, which we can expect in the future. Although nice looking and roomy, comfort was not exceptional and price was seriously inflated. I was expecting this vehicle to be in the high $30K to $40k range, but our tester exceeded $50K, which in my opinion puts it into the luxury category which this is not. Loaded to the hill, the Outlander and the Mitsubishi brand are certainly giving it their all, but I think they have some more work to do if they expect profitable results in 2024.

GRASSO’S GARAGE: Buick Envista is the best bang for the buck in 2024 https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/02/22/grassos-garage-buick-envista-is-the-best-bang-for-the-buck-in-2024-run-date-2-24-2024/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 11:03:54 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4481559 Luxury and an under $25K base price tag, is easily an anomaly. But when it comes to Buick and their newest release, the Envista, a new age is born. This vehicle is outstanding, boasting a new design, new vehicle release on the shared Chevrolet Trailblazer frame and a new logo. Excellent styling brings the 2024 Buick Envista to Grasso’s Garage wrapped in Moonstone Gray Metallic with a Black interior, and Santorini Blue accents which showed out exceptionally.

The familiar 1.2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine powers the Envista and does so very quietly and smoothly. Paired with the 6-speed automatic transmission, this was a great combination with minimal road noise. Shaping the Envista is similar to the Toyota Crown and its expanded hatchback length and egg-shape style which was really nice and new to this market of Compact SUVs. Interior-wise, the Envista shined. Super-spacious front cabin seating which encourages commuters and families congruently, proving General Motors and their brands are here to stay.

As the Envista comes in 3 different models in 2024 with the base Preferred model with a $23,495 base price, our tester, the Sport Touring with a $25,195 base price, and the upscale Avenir coming in just under $30K, makes this a great choice for many. All with front-wheel drive powertrain and ready to perform, the Envista boasts an 11” diagonal color HD touchscreen infotainment system, while options include moonroof, heated seats, etc.

As Buick continues to develop and release new vehicles to the market fleet in 2024, they are off to an amazing start. The Buick Envista Sport Touring is a great SUV for many and with the sticker price, even more so. Our tester was very comfortable, spacious and certainly deserving of a chart-topper in the Compact SUV. Welcome back Buick, we are so glad you are here, and with the Envista, here to stay!

2024 Subaru Crosstrek is Wilderness ready https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/02/15/2024-subaru-crosstrek-is-wilderness-ready/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 11:21:07 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3953776 Subaru and their outdoorsy-like following, boasts tremendous options for consumers looking to enjoy what nature has to offer. With the release of the Wilderness package which added Copper finish accents, anti-glare hood decal, Wilderness badging, whitewall Yokohama 17-inch tires and water-repellant upholstery to the already popular Crosstrek. Mounted on the third generation Subaru Global Platform frame, The Crosstrek Wilderness is roomy with just shy of a 105 inch wheelbase and 176 inches in length. The 5-door cargo space exceeded 54.9 cubic feet making this more than a grocery getter and confirming its mountain getaway-like vehicles usage ability. Roof racks also were present which could hold up to 700 lbs. of static weight; winning!

Powering the Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness was the 2.5 Liter Boxer-style engine offering 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a whiny Lineartronic CVT transmission, road noise was at the forefront and noticeable for all passengers.

The Crosstrek has been a huge hit for an array of consumers who enjoy 4-season weather. It boasts a great price, decent gas mileage, a spacious interior and power enough for off-road and highway uses. The Crosstrek Wilderness is no different and impressively has good looking exterior lines and color accents that make it worth the additional spend. 2024 Dodge Hornet is average at best https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/02/08/2024-dodge-hornet-is-average-at-best/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 11:02:01 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3744780 As Dodge and the team at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) continue to try to find innovative ways to design and develop vehicles for their dwindling list of sedan and SUV consumers. Due to this, the Dodge Hornet nameplate was pulled from the archives and re-released as Dodge’s way of exploring the realistic priced market. Entry level and ready to ride the 2024 Dodge Hornet is similar to the 1977 AMC version; subpar. Its Dodge Dart-like curvatures give off the vibes of a sedan, while the Hornet is a compact SUV and the interior matches the ride height and feel of a sedan. In competition with the Honda HR-V, Alfa Romeo Tonale, Mazda CX-30 and Hyundai Kona, the category is already bulging at the seams with winners, we struggle to understand why the release of the Hornet was in this category and not one in need of new blood.

While maintaining the 7th largest automobile manufacturing company in the world, FCA certainly deserves accolades for exploring this opportunity, but maybe some oversight as well. While sharing the Hornet’s frame and components with the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the Hornet is certainly a less sportier version and one that is ready for a commuter. Wrapped in Blu Bayou paint, eyes are all over the black badging and as much exterior aesthetics as possible to ensure looking at the Hornet is appealing. Our GT Plus AWD tester was powered with a 2.0 I4 DOHC Hurricane 4 Engine with ESS, producing 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft torque. The Hornet was not lazy at all in its get up and go, but had an increased road noise from the front row seats.

In Grasso’s Garage, being honest is our first priority and ensuring readers understand all aspects of the vehicles we are reviewing. Whether in the market for a new car or not, we strive to make sure you have all of the facts when it comes to the goods and sometimes the hard truths. FCA has always done a great job of releasing vehicles to the market that are packed with plenty of punch with their Challenger, Charger and SRT fleet while options galore and outstanding comfort has always been their strong suit. The Hornet boasts a few accolades but is easily noticeable that FCA put pricing over product and that could jeopardize sales. The Hornets basicness is a decent option for compact cruisers in this price category, while keeping in mind there are many options all worth a scholarly test drive.

2024 Colorado ZR2 is upscale and kicks the competition https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/02/01/2024-colorado-zr2-is-upscale-and-kicks-the-competition/ Thu, 01 Feb 2024 11:01:01 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3684554 As fuel prices continue to create the new normal, manufacturers continue to come up with new ways to roll out vehicles to keep up with the competition. In Chevrolet’s mind, they roll out a new 2024 Colorado which boasts a new overall look. Our tester was a ZR2, which is a great truck for the off-roaders looking for fun while maintaining an everyday price.

Powering the 2024 Colorado fleet is the popular and proven 2.7L Turbo High-Output with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. This paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission makes and Colorado trim level very potent. Our 4WD ZR2 Crew Cab wrapped in Sterling Grey Metallic, was really appealing to the naked eye and did an outstanding job with its correct ride-height stance and aggressive front fascia’s. The ZR2 package offered an array of upgrades to suspension, rocker panel protection and accessory storage while a tailgate stow flex storage compartment was also a nice addition.

On the Interior, our ZR2 4WD came with a ZR2 Convenience Package on our week-long tester, which included heated steering wheel, memory seats and some safety upgrades. Our tester also included a $1,000 sunroof option and a $950 Technology package.

Chevrolet historically has had an uphill battle trying to keep up with the competition as their vehicles are designed to be priced right, basic and entry level, with the upgradeable options in their own fleet. Alternatives such as GMC for upscale trucks, Cadillac for upscale and powerful sedans; since the elimination of Pontiac and Buick to fill in the gaps for price and comfort. The Colorado is no different, it serves a lot of purposes depending on pricing and utilization and is certainly a hit, but one that continues to chase the Ranger, Frontier and Tacoma in comparison. The ZR2 is really a great option with its increased ride height and comfort but, like everything else, that comes with an increased price. Has anyone priced a Jeep Wrangler recently? Yikes!

Ticker: Healey budget up for debate Feb. 7; Toyota, GM issue warning on older airbags https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/01/29/ticker-healey-budget-up-for-debate-feb-7-toyota-gm-issue-warning-on-older-airbags/ Mon, 29 Jan 2024 22:53:31 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4392749 Legislators plan to kick off fiscal 2025 budget hearings on the same day that joint committees must make decisions on thousands of bills.

The first budget hearing on Wednesday, Feb. 7 in Gardner Auditorium will feature testimony from Administration and Finance Secretary Matt Gorzkowicz and “other invited participants,” according to a Senate Ways and Means Committee media advisory.

Ways and Means Chairs Sen. Michael Rodrigues and Rep. Aaron Michlewitz also said Monday they want to hear from Gov. Maura Healey.

“As we consider Governor Healey’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2025, it’s critical we remain clear-eyed about our current fiscal environment and bring the budget conversation to all corners of our state, encouraging our members, our communities, and the public to provide feedback,” Rodrigues and Michlewitz said in a joint statement.

Toyota, GM issue warning on older airbags

Toyota and General Motors are telling the owners of about 61,000 older Corolla, Matrix, RAV4 and Pontiac Vibe models to stop driving them because their Takata air bag inflators are at risk of exploding and hurling shrapnel.

The urgent warning Monday covers certain Corolla compact cars and Matrix hatchbacks from the 2003 and 2004 model years, as well as the RAV4 small SUV from 2004 and 2005. Also covered are about 11,000 Pontiac Vibes from 2003 and 2004, which are essentially the same as the Matrix and were made at the same California factory. Most of the vehicles are in the U.S.

“If the air bag deploys, a part inside is more likely to explode and shoot sharp metal fragments, which could cause serious injury or death to the driver or passengers,” Toyota said in a statement.

Owners can go to nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter their 17-digit vehicle identification number to see if their cars are affected.

2024 Audi S6 Prestige is easily fantastic https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/01/25/2024-audi-s6-prestige-is-an-easily-fantastic/ Thu, 25 Jan 2024 11:10:50 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3638479 Thinking back to the real purpose of the Audi Brand, it’s easily designed around Sport and Luxury. Delivering over 40 different model options to the fleet, Audi has no problem developing vehicles for all types of consumers. The 2024 Audi S6 is a fantastic way to ride or drive, not only in its luxury fashion, but its comfort level and power are simply extraordinary.

Powering the 4-door, 5-passenger luxury sedan 2024 Audi S6, is the proven 2.9L biturbo TFSI V6 engine that produces 444 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an 8-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive system, this mild-mannered powerful sedan delivers an abundance of energy to the road and passengers alike. With this combination, no power shortage was witnessed, while still maintaining 22+ miles per gallon on our week-long test in the Hudson Valley.

Riding on 21-inch double-split spoke V-design wheels, the Audi S6 rode comfortably and was very appealing to onlookers. On the interior, its typical Audi. Dual screens servicing Infotainment and climate, were both very easy to use. With increasing technology these days, these items can easily become outlandish, so it was good to see Audi sticking to what works. Our Prestige package inclusive of the $8,200 expense added safety items like Remote park assist and Intersection assist, HD Matrix-design LED headlights with animation for headlights and taillights, power soft-closing doors and head-up display. The S Sport package was also witnessed on our tester and added dynamic all-wheel drive steering, red brake calipers, sport exhaust and sport rear differential.

Audi has always been a middle child in the Volkswagen brand of companies, with VW on the more basic end and Porsche on the upper end. With Audi slapped in the middle, the sport and luxury combination of their siblings are easily shown in their models but with the S-fleet at the premier level, its difficult to tell easily. For the S6, this vehicle a fantastic option for commuters, families and speed enthusiasts as its stands on its own and displays a great array of attributes for both the driver and the passenger and onlooker. With a $70K plus base price, the added power is certainly fun while the comfort is what showed out nicely the most.

Ford cuts F-150 Lightning output, ups Bronco, Ranger production https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/01/20/ford-cuts-f-150-lightning-output-ups-bronco-ranger-production/ Sat, 20 Jan 2024 23:06:48 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4316287 Ford Motor Co.’s decision to reduce all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup production is affecting 1,400 jobs in Dearborn, Michigan. Meanwhile, it’s hiring nearly 900 people for assembly of Bronco SUVs and Ranger midsize trucks.

The Dearborn automaker in a Friday news release said it’s seeking to balance production to meet customer demand. It says it expects growth for Lightning sales this year, but it’s less than previously anticipated. The production cut is the latest pullback by the automaker in the EV space.

“We are taking advantage of our manufacturing flexibility to offer customers choices while balancing our growth and profitability. Customers love the F-150 Lightning, America’s best-selling EV pickup,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said in a statement. “We see a bright future for electric vehicles for specific consumers, especially with our upcoming digitally advanced EVs and access to Tesla’s charging network beginning this quarter.”

Lightning sales last year were up 55%, making it the country’s best-selling all-electric pickup. Ford implemented a several thousand-dollar price drop in July.

In January 2022, Ford announced plans to double Lightning production to 150,000 vehicles per year. The Rouge Electric Vehicle Center was down for six weeks last summer to expand capacity.

Ford is adding a 1,600-person third crew at Michigan Assembly in preparation for the launches of the new Ranger and off-road-focused Ranger Raptor. The plant will produce vehicles seven days a week instead of five with three crews working two shifts.

Others affected by the Lightning production cut will be placed in roles at the Rouge Complex or other facilities in southeast Michigan, according to the company.

Anyone else will be able to take advantage of the Special Retirement Incentive Program available this year through the new United Auto Workers contract. Depending on the number of employees who apply for the buyout, a few dozen workers at component plants supporting Lightning production could be affected. Ford says it would provide placements for those employees within southeast Michigan, too.

Ford in October said it was cutting $12 billion in planned EV investment as the growth in adoption slows. That included almost halving the size of its planned west Michigan battery plant in Marshall and delaying by a year the launch of production at one of its two battery plants in Kentucky with SK On. The automaker also cut back production in Mexico of the Mustang Mach-E SUV and has decreased requirements for dealers to be EV certified in the coming years.

2024 Hyundai Kona AWD a generational improvement https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/01/18/2024-hyundai-kona-awd-a-generational-improvement/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 11:01:26 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3460247 Hyundai has become a significant part of families across the country due to their rightly priced vehicles added with great factory warranties. With an array of vehicles fit for every member of the family, the Hyundai Kona surfaces in 2024 with a larger and more capable vehicle than ever.

Wrapped in Denim Blue Pearl, the 2024 Hyundai Kona Limited AWD shows out in Grasso’s Garage very nicely. Its small frame and compact-like size has a lot of value for the buck.

Utilizing the ever-popular and proven 1.6L Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine produces 190 horsepower or 147 with the 2.0 liter option. Both engine options are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The HTRAC all-wheel drive system also surfaces on the Kona as in past models and is nicely utilized for those drivers who battle winters with snow. This powertrain combination manufactured commuter-like fuel mileage and on our test we noticed 28 mpg’s consistently.

On the interior, we notice a 12.3” infotainment system with navigation and connectivity. The seats were very spacious and roomy, while enjoying long distance travel or city-like commuting. With the 2nd generation Hyundai Kona, which rolled out in 2023, has received a new front and rear fascia and added a hybrid version to the fleet. Overall the Kona has grown 5.9 inches overall and 2.4 inches in length to the wheelbase.

The Hyundai Kona serves its fleet and customers congruently. Its priced-right, entry-level SUV provides similarities to the Hyundai Sante Fe on the interior, while having a smaller hatchback style storage without the price and truck bed. As the Kona is larger than the previous generation, and still smaller than the Tucson, the Kona is the 2nd smallest SUV in the fleet, but easily the biggest bang for the buck.

2024 Genesis GV80 is a smooth luxury cruiser https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/01/11/2024-genesis-gv80-is-a-smooth-luxury-cruiser/ Thu, 11 Jan 2024 11:02:44 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3519711 As Genesis continues to outkick its coverage and provide great pricing for upscale vehicles in the luxury market, the GV80 AWD 3.5T Prestige rolls into Grasso’s Garage with character, comfort and smoothness for all riders to enjoy.

The Genesis GV80 is the fleet’s largest SUV and flagship 7-passenger vehicle offering great storage and legroom for all riders. For the GV80, we noticed 20” inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof and heated and ventilated front seats. 7 exterior color options including our tester, Capri Blue, which was paired with the Urban ground/Beige interior, which was one of two leather color options. A 14.5 inch HD infotainment system was witnessed and utilized with a center console based wheel, and in typical Genesis fashion, was exceptionally easy to use. Additionally the GV80 included heads up display which came standard.

For 2024, the Genesis GV80 was very luxurious appearing and didn’t fall short in the curvatures or exterior fascia’s department. Powering our GV80 tester, was a 375 horsepower 3.5Liter Twin-Turbo V6 engine that produces 391 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a 8-speed automatic transmission that was ultra smooth.

When it comes to Genesis, it seems it’s the forgotten or unpopular brand as you rarely see them on the roads. Keeping in mind they are Hyundai Motor Company’s upscale brand, they offer an array of vehicles and options in the upscale market. Most importantly, they are really comfortable to drive and ride. The seats are specifically designed for passengers who demand comfort and style. Genesis vehicles are also designed to be driven in, ensuring backseat comfort is priority and of livery-type importance. Can we expect an even larger Genesis SUV in the fleet in the future, maybe a GV90, who knows, but one can only hope it’s as exquisite as the rest of the fleet while still maintaining a realistic sticker price instead of sticker shock.

Engine maker Cummins to repair 600,000 Ram trucks  https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/01/10/engine-maker-cummins-to-repair-600000-ram-trucks/ Wed, 10 Jan 2024 22:20:07 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4235051 DETROIT — Engine maker Cummins Inc. will recall 600,000 Ram trucks as part of a settlement with federal and California authorities that also requires the company to remedy environmental damage caused by illegal software that let it skirt diesel emissions tests.

New details of the settlement, reached in December, were released Wednesday. Cummins had already agreed to a $1.675 billion civil penalty to settle claims – the largest ever secured under the Clean Air Act – plus $325 million for pollution remedies.

That brings Cummins’ total penalty to more than $2 billion, which officials from the Justice Department, Environmental Protection Agency, California Air Resources Board and the California Attorney General called “landmark” in a call with reporters Wednesday.

“Let this settlement be a lesson: We won’t let greedy corporations cheat their way to success and run over the health and wellbeing of consumers and our environment along the way,” California AG Rob Bonta said.

Over the course of a decade, hundreds of thousands of Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy duty pickup trucks – manufactured by Stellantis – had Cummins diesel engines equipped with software that limited nitrogen oxide pollution during emissions tests but allowed higher pollution during normal operations, the governments alleged.

In all, about 630,000 pickups from the 2013 through 2019 model years were equipped with the so-called “defeat devices” and will be recalled. Roughly 330,000 more trucks from 2019 through 2023 had emissions control software that wasn’t properly reported to authorities, but the government says those didn’t disable emissions controls. Officials could not estimate how many of the recalled trucks remain on the road.

Stellantis deferred comment on the case to Cummins, which has denied allegations made by the government and is not admitting liability, according to court documents.

The engine maker said in a statement that Wednesday’s actions do not involve any more financial commitments than those announced in December. “We are looking forward to obtaining certainty as we conclude this lengthy matter and continue to deliver on our mission of powering a more prosperous world,” the statement said.

Cummins also said the engines that were cited but are not being recalled did not exceed emissions limits. Punishment for the unreported software is included in the penalty, the company said.

As part of the settlement, Cummins will make up for smog-forming pollution that resulted from its actions.

Preliminary estimates suggested its emissions bypass produced “thousands of tons of excess emissions of nitrogen oxides,” U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland previously said in a prepared statement.

Wednesday’s details come seven years after German automaker Volkswagen agreed to plead guilty to criminal felony counts following investigations into its use of similar defeat devices, a massive emissions scandal known as Dieselgate.

In 2017, the automaker agreed to pay a $2.8 billion criminal penalty in addition to $1.5 billion in separate civil resolutions.

Ticker: China sanctions 5 defense companies; Tesla recalls 1.6 million EVs exported to China   https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/01/07/ticker-china-sanctions-5-defense-companies-tesla-recalls-1-6-million-evs-exported-to-china/ Sun, 07 Jan 2024 22:23:05 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4210373 China announced sanctions Sunday on five American defense-related companies in response to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and U.S sanctions on Chinese companies and individuals.

The sanctions will freeze any property the companies have in China and prohibit organizations and individuals in China from doing business with them, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted online.

It was unclear what impact, if any, the sanctions would have on the companies, BAE Systems Land and Armaments, Alliant Techsystems Operations, AeroVironment, Viasat and Data Link Solutions. Such sanctions are often mostly symbolic as American defense contractors generally don’t sell to China.

The Foreign Ministry said the U.S. moves harmed China’s sovereignty and security interests, undermined peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and violated the rights and interests of Chinese companies and individuals.

Tesla recalls 1.6 million EVs exported to China

Tesla is recalling more than 1.6 million Model S, X, 3 and Y electric vehicles exported to China for problems with their automatic assisted steering and door latch controls.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation announced the recall on Friday. It said Tesla Motors in Beijing and Shanghai would use remote upgrades to fix the problems, so in most cases car owners would not need to visit Tesla service centers.

The recall due to problems with the automatic steering assist function applies to 1.6 million imported Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Ys.

When the automatic steering function is engaged, drivers might misuse the combined driving function, increasing a risk of accidents, the notice said.

The recalls follow a recall in the U.S. last month of more than 2 million of Tesla EVs to improve its system for monitoring drivers.

US new vehicle sales rise 12% as buyers shake off high prices, interest rates, and auto strikes https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/01/03/us-new-vehicle-sales-rise-12-as-buyers-shake-off-high-prices-interest-rates-and-auto-strikes/ Wed, 03 Jan 2024 23:08:27 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4175153&preview=true&preview_id=4175153 By TOM KRISHER (AP Auto Writer)

DETROIT (AP) — Undeterred by high prices, rising interest rates, autoworker strikes and a computer-chip shortage that slowed assembly lines, American consumers still bought 15.6 million new vehicles last year, 12% more than in 2022, the biggest increase in more than a decade.

Yet sales still haven’t returned to the 17 million rate in the years before the pandemic, and there are signs of a cooling market as buyers aren’t as willing to pay astronomical prices that dealers and manufacturers were charging just months ago.

“You see the consumer making a concerted effort to ensure that they’re getting the best price possible,” said Jonathan Chariff, CEO of South Automotive Group, a 10-dealership group in the Miami area. “They basically feel that this is the right time to buy from a perspective of being able to get the discounts.”

Average auto sales prices peaked in December of 2022 just over $47,300, with vehicles in short supply because of the global chip shortage that limited production. Some dealers were able to charge over the sticker price to buyers who needed a new ride or had the money to get one.

But the chip shortage gradually eased last year to the point where it’s nearly over, and assembly lines are running at near normal speeds. General Motors, Ford and Stellantis endured six-week strikes by the United Auto Workers that ended last fall. As a result, vehicle supplies on dealer lots are strong and growing, and prices are starting to fall as automakers and dealers dangle discounts.

Data from J.D. Power show that average prices in mid-December were down 2.7% from the peak, to around $46,000. But they’re still nowhere near pre-pandemic prices due to a 26% runup from 2020 to 2022 as cash-rich buyers drove up prices mainly by buying loaded-out trucks and SUVs. That was about 10 percentage points higher than the inflation rate for the same period.

Still, Jonathan Smoke, chief economist for Cox Automotive, said he expects the gap between the sticker price and the transaction price that consumers pay to widen this year. “We do think that the tables start to turn in 2024,” he said. “Discounting will be the key difference in why transaction prices are declining.”

Discounts, on average, more than doubled year over year in November, Smoke said. “I think we’re starting to see signs that manufacturers are starting to put more into making financing more attractive,” he said, adding that they’re also offering more attractive lease deals.

New vehicle loans averaged around 7% for most of the year, and those could drop even if the Federal Reserve doesn’t start to cut rates, Smoke said.

He and Chariff also say that dealers have had to discount as well. In South Florida, Chariff said he isn’t seeing customer demand back off. His dealerships had strong December sales without the normal lull during the week before Christmas.

There may be more buyers at the lower, more affordable end of the market, which already was heating up last year as supplies rose. For example, sales of the Chevrolet Trax small SUV, which starts at $21,495 including shipping, grew to more than 109,000 last year, four times the 2022 number.

Electric vehicle sales grew 47% to a record 1.19 million for the full year, according to Motorintelligence.com. The EV market share grew from 5.8% in 2022 to 7.6% last year. But EV sales growth slowed toward the end of the year. In December, they rose 34%.

Gas-electric hybrid sales grew 54% to 1.2 million last year, with market share leaping from 5.6% in 2022 to 7.7%.

Among manufacturers, General Motors, the top seller in the U.S., posted a strong 14% sales increase for the year. Toyota sales grew 7%, while Honda was up 33%. Nissan sales grew 23%, with Hyundai up 12%. Stellantis, maker of Jeep, Ram and other vehicles, saw its sales drop about 1% for the year.

Ford’s F-Series pickup trucks are likely to remain the top selling vehicle in the U.S. when the company reports numbers on Thursday. But General Motors said it sold more full-size pickups than Ford — 839,517 — with its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra combined.

Toyota’s RAV4 small SUV was the country’s top-selling vehicle that wasn’t a pickup truck. RAV4 sales rose 9% last year to almost 435,000.

2024 Toyota Grand Highlander is big, brawny and priced right https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/12/21/2024-toyota-grand-highlander-is-big-brawny-and-priced-right/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 11:04:54 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3303297 With 2024 around the corner, manufacturers are destined to release vehicles in the fleet in order to keep up with consumer demand and consumer wants. Gas Mileage, new aesthetics, larger capacities, are just a few of the items that come to mind. For Toyota, the 2024 Grand Highlander is their major focus, as if the long-lasting Highlander wasn’t enough for consumers, a bigger and more brawny version hits the dealerships in hopes of keeping up with Jeep’s Grand Wagoneer for a much less price.

With 7-passenger vehicles all the craze and 3rd row seat being a more prime component in vehicle sales in 2023, manufacturers are riding that wave into 2024 and releasing bigger than ever vehicles, while smaller SUVs and sedans diminish. For Toyota, bigger is always better as their long history or conquering the large SUV market has always been a priority. The Grand Highlander is no different as it is big and brawny and boasts tremendous legroom and storage capabilities. Our Platinum AWD Grand Highlander was 1 of 7 models offered in the Grand Highlander fleet and had a $10K price bump over the lowest XLE model which starts at $43K. Our tester was wrapped in Ruby Flare Pearl which was an extra $495. Our tester also came with a light gray interior; 1 of 3 interior color options. Powering the Grand highlander for 2024 was a 2.4 Liter 4-cylinder turbo with all -wheel drive and a 8-speed automatic transmission .Producing 265 horsepower the Grand Highlander was not underpowered and had no problem getting up and going.

As a prototype, our tester was very nice on both the outside and inside. It boasted tremendous space, storage capacity and tons of room for just about everything. As the Grand Highlander hits the market, we expect big things for a reasonable price tag as other manufacturers are exceeding this base price tag with just 5-seats and much less room. Similar to other manufacturers and with decreased sales in their mini-van fleet, could 7-passenger, 3rd row vehicles be the official extension of the min-van. Hopefully not for Toyota as the Sienna is a big hit and one that produces nice profits. With Toyotas large array of vehicles, we expect both the Sienna and Grand highlander to be around for years to come.

2024 Mazda CX-90 is icing on the cake https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/12/14/2024-mazda-cx-90-is-icing-on-the-cake/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 13:35:21 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3293319 You know when a house on the block gets a new car, neighbors either attempt to keep up with the Jones’ and buy a new car as well, or they think, wow, that is really really nice; why didn’t I think of that? Well, the all new 2024 Mazda CX-90 is just that and what a beauty it is. First of all, let’s start with the exterior, the styling is superb with its extended front nose and widened shark line grille, the CX-90 shows off both luxury in style, while the Mazda color options are what keeps consumers interested in what Mazda has to offer. Our Black Cherry looking Artisan Red Metallic was unfathomable; what a color.

On the interior, hang on to your hard hat, did Mazda get luxurious on us? Well in the 2024 CX-90, they sure did. As Car & Driver mentions in their most recent analysis of 3rd row SUVs, the Mazda CX-90 topped the chart in driver comfort, 2nd-row comfort, interior styling, and an array of powertrain and chassis accolades. That is very impressive and proves that Mazda is not only on their way to the luxury market, but beating the Grand Cherokee, Pilot, Telluride and Grand Highlander in their analysis. Our interior was Tan Napa Leather which was a lighter brown than I would have expected, but it was still comfortable and inviting.

Powering the Mazda CX-90 is the newly released Inline 6-cylinder 3.3L Turbo SKYACTIV engine producing 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. The new engine got up to speed nicely with minimal lag and was quiet for the interior passengers. With a base CX-90 starting at under $40K, it truly is a great family SUV option.

As most of you know Grasso’s Garage differs from other reviewers, as our criteria is most of the time what others won’t say, but for this review, I will say the Mazda was a great vehicle to drive and enjoy, while the curvatures, body styling and interior were exceptional. Would I say that it is a luxury vehicle in the luxury market? That reminds me of BMW, Mercedes and others, so no, but I think for the price range, it compares with Jeep, Volvo, Acura etc., so lets call it mid-priced luxury. I also want to thank everyone who has reached out directly to me regarding their future car buying questions and input. I hope that you have found success in today’s crazy car market and that you are enjoying those new vehicles for miles to come. If you haven’t reached out, what are you waiting for?

Feds take step toward requiring drunk-proof cars https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/12/12/feds-take-step-toward-requiring-drunk-proof-cars/ Tue, 12 Dec 2023 22:07:20 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3976878 DETROIT — U.S. auto safety regulators say they have taken the first step toward requiring devices in vehicles that prevent drunk or impaired driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Tuesday that it is starting the process to put a new federal safety standard in place requiring the technology in all new passenger vehicles.

Such devices were required in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that was passed by Congress in 2021.

The agency says an advance notice of proposed rule making will help it gather information about the state of technology to detect impaired driving. The regulation would set standards for the devices once technology is mature, NHTSA said in a statement.

It can take years for a regulation to make its way through the process, which includes public comment periods.

In 2021, the latest year for which statistics are available, nearly 13,400 people were killed in drunken driving crashes, costing society $280 billion in medical expenses, lost wages and loss of quality of life, the statement said.

Alcohol-impaired crash deaths hit nearly a 15-year high in December of 2021 with more than 1,000 people dying.

“It’s going to keep drunk drivers off the road and we’re going to keep people from dying because somebody’s drunk,” U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, a Michigan Democrat who pushed for the regulation. “This is going to be simple technology.”

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, an industry trade group, said in a statement that it is reviewing the NHTSA announcement and that automakers are working to make vehicles safer.

In 2022, the National Transportation Safety Board recommended to NHTSA that all new vehicles in the U.S. be equipped with alcohol monitoring systems that can stop an intoxicated person from driving.

NHTSA and a group of 16 automakers have been jointly funding research on alcohol monitoring, forming a group called Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety.

The group is researching technology that would automatically test a driver’s breath for alcohol and stop a vehicle from moving if the driver is impaired. The driver wouldn’t have to blow into a tube, and a sensor would check the driver’s breath.

Another company is working on light technology that could test for blood alcohol in a person’s finger, the group has said.

NHTSA and law enforcement agencies on Tuesday announced their annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign for the holiday season. Increased enforcement will run from Dec. 13 through Jan. 1.

Virginia sheriff’s office says Tesla was running on Autopilot moments before tractor-trailer crash https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/12/12/virginia-sheriffs-office-says-tesla-was-running-on-autopilot-moments-before-tractor-trailer-crash/ Tue, 12 Dec 2023 20:05:55 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3976125&preview=true&preview_id=3976125 By TOM KRISHER (AP Auto Writer)

DETROIT (AP) — Virginia authorities have determined that a Tesla was operating on its Autopilot system and was speeding in the moments leading to a crash with a crossing tractor-trailer last July that killed the Tesla driver.

The death of Pablo Teodoro III, 57, is the third since 2016 in which a Tesla that was using Autopilot ran underneath a crossing tractor-trailer, raising questions about the partially automated system’s safety and where it should be allowed to operate.

The crash south of Washington remains under investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which sent investigators to Virginia last summer and began a broader probe of Autopilot more than two years ago.

Jeffrey Long, spokesman for the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office, said Tuesday that investigators determined Autopilot was in use on Teodoro’s Tesla Model Y by downloading information from the vehicle’s event data recorder.

Sheriff’s investigators used a search warrant to get access to the recorder in late July. Authorities released some of the results this week after an inquiry by The Associated Press.

The Tesla was traveling 70 mph (112.7 kilometers per hour) on four-lane U.S. 29 near Opal, and was 25 mph over the 45 mph speed limit in that area, Long said. The road has a median and can be accessed at intersections and from driveways.

Long said Teodoro took action in the second before the crash, but he was not sure if that deactivated the system. He did not know what action Teodoro took, but said brakes were applied just one second before impact, slowing the vehicle a little.

He said he could not release the speed at impact or say whether Teodoro or the Tesla applied the brakes because his office is working with NHTSA on its ongoing investigation.

Prior to the crash, the Tesla warned Teodoro to take control of the car because it detected something in the way. But neither the car, which is equipped with Automatic Emergency Braking, nor Teodoro stopped it in time to avoid the crash.

Long said an accident investigator’s analysis of the data recorder “indicated that the system was aware of something in the roadway and was sending messages” to the driver.

“Our investigation also determined that the driver would have had adequate time and distance to avoid the crash had he been traveling at the speed limit,” Long said in a statement. “The full investigation concluded that the driver would have had more than adequate time to brake and even come to a complete stop.”

Initially the truck driver in the crash was charged with reckless driving for creating a barrier to traffic, Long said, but the charge was dropped in October by the commonwealth attorney at the request of the Sheriff’s Office.

Under Virginia law, a driver gives up the legal right-of-way if they violate the speed limit, Long said.

The tractor-trailer was pulling from a truck stop onto the highway at the time of the crash, authorities said.

In October of 2021, the head of the National Transportation Safety Board called on Tesla to limit where Autopilot can operate and to put a better system in place to make sure drivers are paying attention.

Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy wrote to CEO Elon Musk pointing out that her agency’s investigation of a similar crash with a semi in 2016 found that Tesla allows its vehicles to run on Autopilot on roads where it wasn’t designed to operate safety. An NTSB spokesman said Tuesday that Musk has not responded to Homendy’s letter.

Tesla did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Its website says Autopilot and a more sophisticated “Full Self Driving” system cannot drive themselves and are meant to assist drivers who have to be ready to intervene at all times.

With Autopilot, a Tesla can steer, accelerate and brake automatically in its lane, the website says.

In a statement posted Monday on X, formerly Twitter, Tesla said safety is stronger when Autopilot is engaged.

The Virginia crash brings to 35 the number of Tesla crashes under investigation by NHTSA since June of 2016. In all the cases, the agency suspects the Teslas were operating on a partially automated driving system. At least 17 people have died.

Recent crashes NHTSA is investigating include a July 5 head-on collision between a Tesla Model 3 and Subaru Impreza in South Lake Tahoe, California. The driver of the Subaru and an infant traveling in the Tesla were killed.

NHTSA also sent investigators to a March 15 crash in Halifax County, North Carolina, that injured a 17-year-old student. The State Highway Patrol said at the time that the driver of the 2022 Tesla Model Y, a 51-year-old male, failed to stop for the bus, which was displaying all of its activated warning devices.

A message was left seeking comment from the agency, which hasn’t made public the results of its Tesla crash investigations.

2023 Genesis G80 gets Electrified https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/12/07/2023-genesis-g80-gets-electrified/ Thu, 07 Dec 2023 11:03:36 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3286861 As the sleeper brand and Hyundai’s upscale brand, Genesis, still tries to squeeze as much out of the review pie as possible, they deliver to Grasso’s Garage their Electrified G80 AWD. Back in 2021, we experienced the G80 and were very impressed with the overall stature, cosmetic aesthetics and comfort all while enjoying that great “cheaper than the rest” price tag. Well, well, well, some good things never change. Our G80 Electrified AWD tester was wrapped in Capri Blue Paint which showed out well and was appealing to the blue lovers such as myself, while other aesthetics of typical EV’s were noticeable.

Powering the Electrified G80, a 136 kW front and rear motor with a 87.2 kWh battery which boasts a zero-sixty in just over 4 seconds. As in most EV’s the pickup was great and the quietness was very enjoyable. We noticed 303 miles on a full charge, while as advertised was 282, so that was better than expected. Clearly depending on what interior items you use, such as heat, A/C, etc., could alter this range number slightly.

On the inside, it was all the luxury you can imagine. Massaging front seats, nicely sized and easy to use 12.3” digital instrument cluster, and a 3-zone climate control. A Lexicon Premium Audio system is also present, and like other Genesis models, was very nice and concert like for 80’s best hits like myself.

For consumers, the Electrified G80 is a great overall option as it checks a lot of boxes, and with sales numbers growing rapidly, consumers tend agree. In 2021, they had 6,031 G80’s delivered to consumers, while in 2022, 4,125 G80’s were delivered. Hopefully in 2024, they see another boost in sales with the addition of the Electrified option as the G80 really is a good EV Luxury vehicle ready to hit the streets running and with a commendable range. Let’s be honest, Hyundai delivers a great vehicle to consumers, with great warranties and vehicles that look good on the road, add the luxury of Genesis to that existing success and what more could you want from a vehicle?

Grasso’s Garage is here for you! Are you in the market for a new car? I would be happy to provide my honest input. All you have to do is email me: marc.grasso@bostonherald.com.

2023 Integra Type S keeps Acura sporty https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/11/30/2023-integra-type-s-keeps-acura-sporty/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 12:42:44 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3271906 As Acura, Honda Motor Co.’s upscale brand, continues to deliver exactly what consumers want, the 4-door sedan is no secret to both brands. Originally the Integra, a 2-door sports coupe, was eliminated for vehicles with 3-letter naming conventions such as theRSX,  TSX, TLX and others in larger categories. With the Integra back in the fleet again, this time as a 4-door sedan with a more sportier, yet familiar naming convention, the addition of the Type S. Welcome to Grasso’s Garage the 2023 Acura Integra Type S, wrapped in familiar Apex Blue Pearl, this easily is a standout in the production based sports sedans. With a $50K price tag range, competition exists in both BMW with the 2-series and Audi with the S3.

Younger buyers top the charts for Integra consumers as 36% of buyers are under 35, while 70% of the total market was cornered in 2022 by the release of the Integra keeping Audi, MB and BMW at bay with only 19K in sales, while the Itegra did 19K in sales by itself; pretty impressive!

The 5th generation Integra offers a 320 horsepower, 2.0 liter VTEC turbocharged engine with 310 lb-ft of torque. Our 6-speed manual transmission tester made the Integra that much more fun, while in 2022 only 10% of Integras were manuals.

The Exterior design is bold and aggressive looking unlike Lexus and BMW, while the interior experience is tailored for its enthusiast type buyers. As Performance is clearly the top priority for Acura, the Integra delivers a new interpretation of sophistication for street performance. A moonroof is not available on the Type S confirming its high-performance structure and improved separation over other Integra models. Aerodynamics, advanced brake cooling and sports seats show importance on the Integra Type S, while a 10.2” digital instrument cluster was typical of Acura with a few interior aesthetic flares. An ELS 3D Studio premium audio keeps enthusiasts thrilled for increased sound control, while best in class legroom and cargo space are chart-topping.

Driving the Integra Type S is a dream. The exhaust sounds, overall looks and 6-speed manual were really enjoyable on back roads and mountainous terrain. With a curb weight of 3,219 pounds, the Type S is 300+ pounds less than the S3 and also is the cheapest in category with the S3 being almost $3,000 more. Do I have your attention? As a 3-letter naming convention owner in my past; yes, the TSX, TLX, RLX, RDX and MDX, the Integra Type S is worth a drive. Did I mention the TL? Yeah, I had one of them too.

Ticker: 32,000 Jeep Wrangler hybrids recalled; Unemployment claims drop by 24,000 https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/11/23/ticker-32000-jeep-wrangler-hybrids-recalled-unemployment-claims-drop-by-24000/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 17:27:36 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3801879 Automaker Stellantis on announced a recall of more than 32,000 of its hybrid Jeep Wrangler SUVs because they pose a potential fire risk.

As part of what the company described as a routine review of customer information, Stellantis determined that eight of the hybrid Wranglers had caught fire while they were turned off and parked. Six of the vehicles were being charged when the fires started. The company said it doesn’t believe anyone was hurt in the fires.

The recall covers 2021-2024 models of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUVs. All other Wrangler models have been deemed safe by Stellantis, which maintains its U.S. headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

The SUVs affected by the recall can still be driven until they are fixed, but Stellantis is recommending they be parked away from buildings and not be charged until they can be repaired. The fixes involve either resetting or updating the software, or replacing the vehicle’s battery pack.

Stellantis plans to contact the owners of the SUVs that need to be fixed.

Unemployment claims drop by 24,000

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell sharply last week, a sign that U.S. job market remains resilient despite higher interest rates.

The Labor Department reported Wednesday that jobless claims dropped by 24,000 to 209,000. The previous week’s total — 233,000 — had been the highest since August. The four-week moving average of claims, which smooths out week-to-week volatility, fell by 750 to 220,000.

Overall, 1.84 million Americans were receiving unemployment benefits the week that ended Nov. 11, down by 22,000 from the week before.

Auto strike: Stellantis-UAW deal has enough votes to ratify https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/11/17/auto-strike-stellantis-uaw-deal-has-enough-votes-to-ratify/ Sat, 18 Nov 2023 00:40:13 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3748715 A majority of United Auto Workers members at Stellantis NV have cast enough “yes” votes to approve a new four-and-a-half year deal, the second of three with Detroit automakers, according to an analysis by The Detroit News.

Passage of the deal has secured nearly 70% of votes from hourly workers at reporting locals, according to the UAW’s vote tracker, after totals from workers at Jefferson North and Mack assembly plants in Detroit were included. That leaves 10,902 votes between the yes and no totals, more than the total hourly employees at the remaining locals.

Two sources familiar with the process confirmed the analysis. Representatives for the UAW and Stellantis declined to comment because members still are voting into the weekend.

The UAW in a letter obtained by The News late Thursday showed final ratification results for its agreement with General Motors Co. had almost 55% hourly support. An agreement on Friday morning was passing at Ford Motor Co. with more than 67% support, though it remained too close to call with results from locations like the Dearborn Truck Plant still outstanding. Two Ford locals had voted down the agreement so far.

GM has not commented on the ratification results.

The agreements secure 27% general wage increases over the life of the four-and-a-half-year term. They include cost-of-living adjustments, increased retirement contributions, and pathways to organizing workers at electric-vehicle assembly plants. Stellantis’ deal commits to $19 billion in U.S. investments, including allocating a midsize truck to the idled Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois as well as committing to building a battery plant there.

There were three locals representing workers at the maker of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram that had a majority of no votes. Those includes the locals representing workers at Mopar parts distribution centers in St. Clair County’s Marysville and Boston, facilities that could be closed under the automaker’s plan to consolidate and modernize its aftersales business that it says wouldn’t reduce the number of jobs.

Workers at Toledo Assembly Plant, who had stood on strike the longest of the Stellantis members for 44 days ending Oct. 28, voted 54.9% against the agreement.

GM-UAW members this week approved the new deal. Earlier this week, it appeared the contract was likely to be turned down after members at large GM plants voted against it. But on Wednesday workers at the large full-size SUV plant in Arlington, Texas, and by workers at the Ultium Cells LLC battery plant in northeast Ohio supported it, swinging the results to a firmer yes vote.

Main issues driving opposition came mostly from legacy workers who’ve been with GM for more than a decade. Their concerns: not enough gains for pensions, and not enough in wage increases for workers who for years went without wage increases amid the Great Recession and GM bankruptcy.

Ticker: Honda recalls nearly 250K vehicles because bearing can fail https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/11/17/ticker-honda-recalls-nearly-250k-vehicles-because-bearing-can-fail/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 20:55:59 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=3746768 Honda is recalling nearly 250,000 vehicles in the U.S. because bearings can fail, causing the engines to stall and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall covers certain 2018 and 2019 Honda Pilot SUVs and Odyssey minivans and some 2017 and 2019 Ridgeline pickup trucks. Also affected are certain 2015 to 2020 Acura TLX cars and some 2016 to 2020 Acura MDX SUVs.

Honda says in documents posted Friday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that connecting rod bearings in the engine can wear and seize due to a manufacturing error, damaging the engines. The engines could run improperly or stall while being driven, increasing the risk of a fire, crash or injury.

FDA screening US cinnamon imports after kids sickened by tainted applesauce

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is screening imports of cinnamon from multiple countries for toxic lead contamination after growing reports of children who were sickened after eating pouches of applesauce and apple puree.

Cinnamon from a manufacturer in Ecuador is the “likely source” of high levels of lead found in recalled pouches of applesauce puree linked to illnesses in at least 34 children in 22 states, the FDA said Friday.

But the agency noted there have not been other reports of illness or elevated blood lead levels tied to the spice that’s popular in holiday baking.

The agency has not yet been able to collect and directly test samples of the cinnamon in the product. Import records show that WanaBana LLC of Coral Gables, Florida, received shipments of cinnamon apple fruit puree from Austrofood, a manufacturer in Ecuador.

One pouch of recalled WanaBana apple cinnamon puree collected from a Dollar Tree store was found to have lead levels more than 200 times higher than proposed FDA guidance would allow, officials said.
