Many of you sat in on a card game in his kitchen, stood by him at the polls or at a stand-out, or were served a drink by him or, those lucky few, shared one with him. Barbara Lynch https://www.bostonherald.com/obituaries/barbara-lynch-mashpee-ma/ Sun, 31 Mar 2024 04:00:00 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?post_type=obituary&p=4646329 Barbara A. (Owens) Lynch, of Mashpee, passed away on March 17, 2024 at Cape Cod Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph F. Lynch, Sr. with whom she shared over fifty wonderful years of marriage.Barbara was born March 2, 1941 in Boston, MA to the late Francis J. Owens and the late Margaret A. (O’Leary) Owens. From her earliest days, she shared a special bond with her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth A. (Jennings) O’Leary, whose home was also Barbara’s. She proudly graduated from Jamaica Plain High School in 1958, embarking on a journey that saw her joining Sears as an administrative assistant shortly thereafter. It was in the bustling aisles of the catalog department where she met her future husband, affectionately known as ‘Joe.’ Their love story began, culminating in a joyful marriage in September 1964.Embracing motherhood with the birth of her two cherished children in 1967 and 1970, Barbara’s nurturing spirit led her to further her education in the Certified Nursing Assistant program at Quincy College. Her compassionate heart found its calling as she dedicated herself to a career as a home health aide, touching the lives of many until her well-deserved retirement in 2017.Barbara made her home in Dedham for 39 years before moving to Mashpee in 2003 to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren after the loss of her son. In Mashpee, her presence quickly became a staple in the community. She not only enriched the Mashpee Women’s Club with her involvement but also stood as a steadfast parishioner at Christ the King Church. Beyond her organized activities, Barbara was a regular volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store, often side by side with her good friend, Joanne. Her enthusiasm for life was infectious; she thrived on staying active, mastering yoga poses or dancing away in Zumba classes, often several times a week. Known for her sweet disposition, Barbara also had a spirited resilience, never shy to ‘get her Irish up’ in defense of her convictions. Above all, she is remembered as a devoted mother, a cherished grandmother, and a loyal friend. Barbara’s absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known her.Barbara leaves behind her beloved daughter, Sharon M. Pinsonneault, and her husband, Leon, of Mashpee, MA; her cherished grandchildren, Casey Pinsonneault of Mashpee, MA, Sydney Pinsonneault of Marstons Mills, MA, and Colby Pinsonneault of Mashpee, MA. Her memory will also be fondly remembered by her adored Persian cat, Tiffany, her ‘fur baby.’ Barbara was predeceased by her loving husband, Joseph F. Lynch, Sr., and her son, Joseph F. Lynch, Jr.To celebrate her life, a visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Christ the King Church, 5 Job’s Fishing Rd., Mashpee, MA 02649, followed by a Funeral Mass at the same location at 11:00 AM. Norman Knight https://www.bostonherald.com/obituaries/norman-knight-boston-ma/ Sun, 17 Mar 2024 04:00:00 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?post_type=obituary&p=4533135 NORMAN KNIGHT: PHILANTHROPIST, ENTREPRENEUR, HUMANITARIAN, ADVISOR, BOSTONIAN Norman Knight, a major Boston philanthropist, who dedicated his life to helping others, died at his home in Boston on March 9, 2024. Mr. Knight was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on July 24, 1924. He was a successful media entrepreneur. After stops in St. Louis, Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, and New York, he came to Boston in the mid-1950s and founded Knight Quality Stations, which grew to twenty radio stations. He was recognized both nationally and locally as a leader in the broadcast industry. He was a pioneer in recognizing the value of FM stations and the making of documentaries. He introduced cable to the Caribbean. In 1996, the Broadcasters Foundation of America awarded Mr. Knight its first Golden Mike Award. After many years in the radio medium, on January 1, 1998, Mr. Knight sold Knight Quality Stations. He then turned most of his attention to philanthropy. Mr. Knight’s personal philosophy was that you measure the value of a person not by how much the person has, but by how much the person has given away. In his business activities he strived to give 20% of the profits to charitable causes. In 1954, he established the Norman Knight Charitable Foundation. Through the Foundation and with the utilization of his individual funds he conducted his philanthropic activities. Mr. Knight generously funded the operations of the Foundation. The Foundation will be perpetual and continue to support his charitable endeavors. He contributed generously to numerous charities during his life and has been recognized by more than fifty organizations for his contributions. In 1959, Mr. Knight was one of the co-founders of The Hundred Club of Mass., Inc., a Massachusetts charity that provides benefits to the surviving family members of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty in Massachusetts. Mr. Knight’s mission was that no firefighter or police officer that died while protecting us, would ever be forgotten. He served without compensation as Chairman of the Board and President for over 50 years. On his watch, Mr. Knight personally met with the surviving families of every firefighter and police officer in Massachusetts killed in the line of duty. He often formed a personal bond with these families. His message to first responders was simple – if you fall in the line of duty, the Hundred Club gives you the unconditional and unequivocal promise that your service will not be forgotten, and the Hundred Club will support your families for the rest of their lives. In 1995, after a disastrous fire in Charlestown, Mr. Knight began funding the Norman Knight Hyperbaric Medicine Center at Massachusetts Eye & Ear (“MEEI”). Prior to that time there were no other hyperbaric treatment centers in New England. Since 1995 the Center has had approximately 40,000 patient treatments saving countless lives. In addition to funding the Center, he funded seventeen different endowments at MEEI and MGH focused on nursing. Nurses held a special place in Mr. Knight’s heart as he saw them as the first line of defense for a patient. The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical and Professional Development is at MGH, and the Norman Knight Nursing Center is at MEEI. Recently, his endowments at MGH awarded forty scholarships and grants to nurses. Mr. Knight was a founder of the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial Fund and helped to build and finance the state’s first and only firefighters’ memorial located at the State House. Primarily funded through private donations, the Memorial was dedicated in 2008. His benevolence and largesse extended beyond the public charity sector as he personally helped many individuals and organizations. Mr. Knight was particularly fond of the Boy Scouts. He was one of the youngest people in the U.S. to become an Eagle Scout. He served on the national executive board of the Boy Scouts of America. He donated fifty-four acres of pristine forest land to the Boy Scouts and as a condition of the gift he directed that there would be no public recognition of the gift. Not only was Mr. Knight a prolific philanthropist, he also freely gave of his most precious possession – his time. As a few examples and by no means an exhaustive list of his activities, he: was a friend and advisor to President John F. Kennedy, served on an advisory committee to President Eisenhower for both Eisenhower terms, was a radio/television advisor to Cardinal Cushing and financed the building of the studio that televised the first television Mass, served on the Boston University Development Council, served on the President’s Council at Boston College, contributed equipment and financing for WBUR and the radio station at Clark University, provided the initial funding and was instrumental in the founding of The Samaritans in the U.S. that focused on suicide prevention, was Co-Chairman with John Glenn and President Eisenhower of the American Freedom Center in Valley Forge, PA, was a consultant to the BBC, established awards for the Royal College of Anaesthetists in England, served on the Executive Board of the American Red Cross, with Robert Kraft he was part of the leadership that revitalized Meals on Wheels, was one of the originators of the anti-smoking campaign in the U.S., was a member of and active in Aims for Freedom that promoted free enterprise throughout Europe, was a co-founder of The Kidney Disease Foundation, and served for 40 years on the Executive Committee of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. This is by no means a complete list of his activities. Mr. Knight was predeceased by his son Jeffrey and is survived by his sons Scott, of Wellesley, Randall, of St. Thomas, Robert, of Boston, five grandchildren and two great grandsons. He is also survived by his long-time loving partner, Binta Ceesay Jallow. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Knight in the early fall. Mr. Knight’s legacy is that of a humble self-made caring man who strived to lift the less fortunate and exerted exemplary efforts to make the world a better place. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Karl Wallinger, ex-member of The Waterboys and creative force behind World Party, dies https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/03/13/karl-wallinger-ex-member-of-the-waterboys-and-creative-force-behind-world-party-dies/ Wed, 13 Mar 2024 11:00:47 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?p=4530048&preview=true&preview_id=4530048 By BRIAN MELLEY (Associated Press)

LONDON (AP) — Karl Wallinger, the multi-instrumentalist and solo force behind the band World Party and former member of The Waterboys, has died.

Wallinger, 66, passed away Sunday, his publicist said. No cause of death was announced.

Wallinger had worked as musical director for a production of “The Rocky Horror Show” in London’s West End when he was recruited on keyboards for The Waterboys in 1983, playing synthesizer and singing backup vocals on their most commercially successful song, “The Whole of the Moon.”

Waterboys founder Mike Scott called him “one of the finest musicians I’ve ever known” in a post Monday on X, formerly Twitter. “Travel on well my old friend,” he said.

Creative differences with Scott led Wallinger to go his own way in 1985 to start World Party, where he created a sound infused with influences of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Sly Stone.

“It just became obvious that it wasn’t going to go anywhere than where it’s gone,” Wallinger told Penny Black Music in 2022 interview. “(Mike Scott) was controlling, and that was it, he wasn’t into doing anything together.”

World Party was better received critically than commercially and despite landing several tunes on the pop music charts, it was more embraced by alternative radio.

“Ship of Fools” reached No. 5 on Billboard’s mainstream rock chart in the U.S. in 1987. “Way Down Now,” went to No. 1 on the Billboard alternative chart in the U.S. in 1990. “Is it Like Today” was his biggest hit in the U.K., reaching No. 19 in 1993. Wallinger’s song “She’s the One” became a No. 1 single for Robbie Williams in 1999.

Wallinger worked on Sinéad O’Connor’s debut album, The Lion and the Cobra, and she lent her vocals to his second album, “Goodbye Jumbo,” which was nominated for a Grammy for best alternative music performance. Q Magazine named Jumbo is 1990 album of the year.

Wallinger was one of many artists who recorded with Peter Gabriel for his Big Blue Ball album.

Gabriel said on X that he was shocked and saddened to learn of the death. He said he admired Wallinger’s work from afar but reached a new level of appreciation when they worked together on what he said was the most creative and fun week he ever had in the studio.

“Karl was overflowing with wonderful musical ideas that blew us all away, all delivered with terrible jokes that had us laughing uncontrollably all day and night,” Gabriel said. “He was such a gifted, natural writer and player, it was a tap that he could turn on at will, effortlessly.”

Mike Andrews of Enable Music, an artist management company in the U.K., who worked with Wallinger on a couple albums, called him a “genius who was never appreciated as widely as (he) should have been.”

Wallinger served as musical director for the 1994 Ben Stiller-directed film “Reality Bites,” starring Ethan Hawke and Winona Ryder.

Wallinger grew up in Prestatyn, Wales, where as a teen he played in PAX, a punk band with Nigel Twist and Dave Sharp, who would go on to form The Alarm. Twist recalled on Instagram that they would hammer out tunes in the loft of Wallinger’s home.

Twist called him “an extraordinary talent, gifted singer/songwriter and multi-talented musician and producer.”

“His songs never fail to reach deep inside and touch your soul,” Twist said. “No matter how you feel, his music would fill you with joy and hope and above all, love, for a better world.”

In 2001, Wallinger had a brain aneurysm and spent years learning how to speak again and play instruments. He returned to touring five years later but never released any more albums.

During his Penny Black Music interview, Wallinger said William’s hit cover of “She’s the One” had rescued him financially after his health setback.

“It was lucky for me that he did it, because he kept us all in biscuits,” Wallinger said. “Everything would have changed; I’d have had to have sold the kids. Got rid of the house and dismantle everything.”

Wallinger is survived by his wife Suzie Zamit, son Louis Wallinger, daughter Nancy Zamit and two grandchildren.

JOE FITZGERALD https://www.bostonherald.com/obituaries/joe-fitzgerald-norwood-ma/ Sun, 10 Mar 2024 05:00:00 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?post_type=obituary&p=4523736 Joe Fitzgerald of Norwood, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was 79 years old. Joe was the devoted husband of the late Carol (Dawson) Fitzgerald. Loving father of Mike Fitzgerald and his wife Kerri of Foxboro, Kate Kelley and her husband Colin of Norwood and Tim Fitzgerald of Norwood. He was the loving and treasured Grampa of Xavier, Elaina and Keira Kelley, and Cameron and Skylar Fitzgerald. Loving son of the late Joseph and Virginia Fitzgerald. Dear brother of Bob Fitzgerald and his wife Tina of Norwood and Dee Fitzgerald of Westwood. Dear brother-in-law of Diane and Jerry Collins of Elmira, NY and the late John Dawson. Dear uncle of Kara and Ted Fannon, Ryan Fitzgerald, Brent and Lauren Fitzgerald, Stephanie and Dan Bronk and Tracy and Chris Vaughn, as well as many great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many cherished, lifelong friends. Joe grew up in Roxbury and graduated from Christian High School in 1962. He went on to attend Mass Maritime Academy before pursuing his dream of becoming a writer. Joe interviewed at many newspapers before starting a job in St. Johnsbury, VT where he would meet his beautiful wife, Carol. After marrying in 1966, they moved back to West Roxbury before ultimately settling in Norwood, where they built a life together. They loved spending time as a family and enjoying summers camping at Hermit Island, swimming in Mousam Lake, and taking yearly trips to Bermuda. Joe and Carol were married for forty-six years before her passing in 2012. Joe would always say one his greatest blessings in life was being ‘Grampa’ and ‘Poppa’ to his five beautiful grandchildren. He loved watching them play and getting to spend time with them. They brought him immense joy, especially after Carol’s passing. Joe was a columnist at the Boston Herald for four decades and was passionate about his writing. What he enjoyed most were the people he met throughout his career, many of whom became lifelong friends. Joe also wrote six books throughout his career and was co-host of the show Sports Beat on channel 38 in Boston. He was a wonderful storyteller and never forgot a name or detail. One of the most important parts of Joe’s life was his deep devotion to his faith. Some of his greatest memories were of his days at Christian High, Dudley Street Church, and nights spent at Singspiration. Joe and Carol both had a love for Southern gospel music and together they created the nonprofit, Meetinghouse Concerts. They looked forward to their trips each year to the National Quartet conventions in Kentucky. While Joe was most often known for what he did professionally, the people that knew him best knew that the three things most important to him were his family, his friends, and his faith. Joe would always say that he was blessed beyond measure. Joe’s family would like to thank KP Poku, the staff at the Thomas Upham House, the staff at Traditions of Dedham and Gentiva Hospice for the love, kindness, and compassion you showed Joe. They are incredibly grateful for all the support you gave to Joe and his family over the last two years. David A. Roth, MD https://www.bostonherald.com/obituaries/david-a-roth-md-newport-beach-ca/ Sun, 10 Mar 2024 05:00:00 +0000 https://www.bostonherald.com/?post_type=obituary&p=4523737 Dr. David Allen Roth, of Newport Beach, CA, formerly of Weston, MA, passed away in early February after a long, brave battle with prostate cancer. Dr. Roth, an internationally recognized neurosurgeon, whose patients included world leaders and rock stars, always claimed his greatest accomplishment was, in his own words: “my two sons”.Dr. Roth was born November 20th, 1932, at the very bottom of the Great Depression, to Dora and Joseph Roth in New Castle, IN. He was the last of six children. While his mother’s dream was for him to become a Rabbi, as a teenager he discovered his own dream of becoming a famous radio disc jockey, after winning a local speech contest. Determined to see more of what the world had to offer, he spent the following summer hitchhiking his way across the American South, with a quick stop in Mexico, only allowed back into the US by showing his library card to the immigration officer. As a high school senior, he won first place in three more speech and dramatic performance contests, beating out future actor James Dean and senator Joe Lieberman. While attending college at the University of Indiana, he was encouraged by his oldest brother Richard to take pre-med courses instead of communications. After graduation, he enrolled in medical school at the same institution. He spent his summers in medical school working as a TV announcer in Las Vegas, devouring the resorts’ midnight 99-cent buffets, sleeping in the green room, and dating show and chorus girls, including Miss Sweden. One of these showgirls, future Hollywood actress Joan Marshall, convinced him to return to medical school to finish his degree, after he vacillated between a career as a disc jockey or physician. After his second year of medical school, he transferred to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, reasoning that since he had settled on medicine as his career, he should go to the best school that would accept him. Two years later, after graduating, he started as a surgical intern at Johns Hopkins, where he would build close relationships with mentors such as Dr. Alfred Blalock, the father of cardiac surgery, Dr. Michael DeBakey, arguably the greatest surgeon of the 20th century, and many residents who would go on to become Chairs at their respective academic institutions.Intern year was followed by acceptance into the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA) Neurosurgery Residency program, after which he continued his surgical training with some of the greatest thinkers and surgeons in the field through a fellowship in London, and ultimately landed his first job as a neurosurgeon at Boston City Hospital, with an appointment as Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. Now at the pinnacle of academia, Dr. Roth published many peer-reviewed journal articles on brain tumors, pain control during surgery, and most seminally, his work as an early pioneer of microneurosurgery. After a few years of success in academia, Dr. Roth took a job at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital as the Chief of Neurosurgery, where he would spend the next 40+ years. He was one of the first surgeons in the United States to use a microscope and surgical binoculars (loupes) for spine surgery, and perfected the technique of minimizing incision size and blood loss, turning many formerly care-intensive spinal surgeries into outpatient procedures. Dr. Roth was recognized in local and national media for his contributions to surgery; by the time he retired, Dr. Roth had accomplished over 12,000 spinal neurosurgical cases.Although his surgical career was quite robust, Dr. Roth’s greatest joy in his life was his family. His marriage to his wife Lisa in 1985, followed by the births of his two sons, Cameron in 1989 and Graham in 1990, focused his purpose on being a loving and dedicated father. He was omnipresent on the sidelines of the Weston High School football field and in the audience at Fenn and Boston University Academy theater performances. Later, he would travel one month to Nashville to watch one son play lacrosse at Vanderbilt, and the next to Palo Alto to attend his other son’s musical performance at Stanford. He appreciated the value of travel, and traveled with his family often: rafting the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, driving across France visiting wine vineyards, visiting national parks in the American West, skiing and hiking in Aspen, and wading in the warm waters of the Turks & Caicos Islands. He was an avid Boston sports fan, and reveled in the dynasty years of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. It was impossible to leave any conversation with him without investment advice, as he was a steadfast devotee of Jack Bogle and the Vanguard philosophy. He was warm, loving, brilliant, dedicated, a little obsessive-compulsive, and only wanted the best for those he loved. His retirement years were spent in sunny Newport Beach, CA, closer to his nieces and nephews, with frequent visits from his sons. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his two sons, Dr. Cameron A. Roth, of Scottsdale, AZ, and Graham S. Roth, of San Francisco, CA, and his loving former wife, Lisa F. Roth, of Lincoln, MA, as well as many nieces and nephews. His ashes will be scattered in the Maroon Bells mountains in Aspen, CO, by his immediate family.
